One of my favorite places to wind down during college was St. Mark’s Bookshop, located a few blocks away from my school and right below the freshman dorms. The store carried things you’d never find at a Barnes & Noble... Independently published books and magazines, books about your favorite artist or designer, things far too focused and underground to be found on Amazon. You know, the good stuff.
And then suddenly it was gone. It was 2014. And my longing to revisit a place that no longer exists has lingered ever since. ALTAR is a love letter to St. Mark’s Bookshop. It carries on the same D.I.Y. aesthetics and everything goes attitude found in so many of the books and magazines I’ve stumbled upon at the store. Economical, yet unconventional. Serious in its outrageousness. And undeniably well-designed.
